NFL Wrap: Todd Collins leads Skins to a win

img105169851.jpgSo Last night Todd Collins came for the Redskins to replace an injured Jason Campbell. He also led the Redskins to a much needed win. That's right I said Todd Collins. Yeah, I didn't know who he was either

After not having much practice time this week after attending the funeral for their fallen comrade Sean Taylor, the Skins got a huge victory 24-16.

At 6-7 the Redskins are still very much in the playoff picture in the extremely weak NFC. Honestly, the Bears (5-8) still have an outside shot but you have to think that they can't lose anymore games.

NFL Monday Night Wrap: Patriots barely escape Ravens

ray.jpgOk So I'm really getting sick of the Patriots. They are ruining this season for me. I didn't even turn on the game until the fourth quarter because I figured that it was going to be a blowout. Much to my surprise, there was about 11 minutes to go and the Patriots were actually down 24-17.

I turned it on about the time when Kyle Boller through the ball into a spot where there were about four Patriots and the closest Raven was about 10 yards away. After the interception Rodney Harrison went over to Brian Billick and talked some smack. Apparently Billick likes to fight hate with love. Check out the video.

I guess he has a crush. I don't know.

So back to the game. After the Patriots scored a field goal it was 24-2. The Ravens could not get a first down to save their lives. With about 3-4 minutes left the Patriots got the ball back. At that point you got the feeling that they were gonna take it down for the score.

With less than 2 minutes to go their was a fourth and 1 situation. The Ravens stopped Tom Brady on the QB sneak and they WON! Not so fast. Their defensive coordinator Rex Ryan called timeout right before the play. On the next play they stopped the Patriots again but there was a false start call against the Patriots. On fourth and six, Tom Brady who isn't known for his scrambling skills, ran for the first down. Oh no!

Later the Ravens had them in another fourth down situation and they broke up the pass in the end zone. The Ref's called a defensive holding call though, which again gave the Patriots another chance, sensing a theme here?

After that play the Ravens defense looked deflated with a lackluster pass rush and Brady with all kinds of time, he found Jabar Gaffney for the game winning score. Who?

The Ravens had one more shot though. Boller threw a hail mary that was actually caught but only a few yards out of endzone. Game over Patriots win again.

NFL Week 13 Wrap: Joe Gibbs to Blame for Redskins Emotional Loss?

21.jpgRedskins Unable to pull of Emotional Victory

The Washington Redskins honored Sean Taylor in every way possible except for winning the game. They started out the game with only 10 defensive players on the field to signify Sean Taylor not being there. You could see members of the Redskins crying at different points in the game. Nearly every member in the crowd had #21 towels or signs.

(Skins with 10 players on the field)

Playing only 5 days after Sean Taylor's death, the Redskins were in position to potentially win the game. Up 16-14 with the game winding down Joe Gibbs attempted to "ice the kicker" by calling a timeout. That would've been fine but he decided to do it again calling two consecutive timeouts. After a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct it changed a 51 yard field goal to a 36 yard chip shot for Rian Lindell.

Gibbs took the blame for this loss as he should have and this should be a lesson to all these coaches doing this silly maneuver. Mike Shanahan started all this madness by calling a timeout and now everyone is doing it. The league needs to make a rule against this because it a ridiculous. With all due respect to Joe Gibbs, I'm glad to see someone get burned by this. Hopefully that will send a message.

Here is the Pregame ceremony for Sean Taylor

Colts have a comfy lead after win over Jags

The Jags did just about everything right against the Colts. They ran the ball well. David Garrard was very efficient despite throwing his first interception of the year but the Colts are still the Colts. Peyton Manning is finally getting adjusted to not have Marvin Harrison in the lineup. He had 4 touchdowns with 288 yards against the Jags.

With this victory the Colts go up 2 games on the Jags and considering that they beat the Jaguars in both of their meeting this season, it would take a collapse for the Jaguars to come back and take the Division. This win should calm the critics down who think that Manning

He's Baaaaack

jackson.jpgAdrian Peterson returned with a vengeance on sunday against the Detroit Lions. After missing 3 games with a knee injury Peterson, who still lead the league in rushing yards, came back and picked up right where he left off rushing for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Viks routed the Lions 42-10. Hows that 10 win season looking now Jon Kitna?

Tavaris Jackson played extremely efficiently. Amazing how much it helps a young quarterback when all the pressure isn't on him and he has a running game to fall back on. Jackson went 18-24 with 204 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Around the League

  • Behind an ancient quarterback, a suddenly diverse playbook and a dominating defense, the Carolina Panthers finally tasted victory at home. Vinny Testaverde threw two touchdown passes and the Panthers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 31-14 win over the 49ers.
  • Norv Turner finally found a way to beat Kansas City. All it took was two touchdowns and 177 yards rushing by LaDainian Tomlinson and eight sacks by the defense.
  • The Jets forced five turnovers, displayed some of their old razzle-dazzle on offense and scored 30 unanswered points, running away with a 40-13 victory over the still winless Dolphins, their largest margin of victory in 17 games.
  • By the time Donovan McNabb comes back, the Philadelphia Eagles might be playing for pride only. Lofa Tatupu set up Seattle's first two touchdowns by intercepting A.J. Feeley twice in the first quarter, and he sealed a 28-24 victory with another pick late.
  • Gus Frerotte throws three touchdown passes, then sweats out two interceptions that fuel an Atlanta comeback in a 28-16 victory, which is the Rams' first home win this season.
  • Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub left Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans in the first quarter after sustaining a left shoulder injury when he was sacked. Vince Young threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns, rallying the Titans to a 28-20 win over the Texans and snapping a three-game skid.
  • JaMarcus Russell's debut may have drawn the biggest cheers. Josh McCown delivered the biggest plays. McCown throws three touchdown passes for Oakland despite missing two series, and the Raiders capitalize on Denver's mistakes to beat the Broncos, 34-20.
  • Arizona turns three of Cleveland's four turnovers into touchdowns, Edgerrin James tops 100 yards rushing and the Cardinals hold on to beat the Browns, 27-21.
  • Devery Henderson fumbles an awkward toss from Reggie Bush, giving Luke McCown time to drive Tampa Bay for a touchdown for a 27-23 victory over New Orleans.
  • Eli Manning redeemed himself just in time and the New York Giants dealt the Chicago Bears' playoff hopes another staggering blow. Manning led two late touchdown drives after throwing two interceptions to lift the Giants to a 21-16 victory over the Bears.
  • Hines Ward catches two touchdown passes to break the Steelers' record for career scoring catches, and Pittsburgh beats Cincinnati, 24-10.

NFL Wrap: The Cowboys take out Favre and the Packers

Brett Favre came into this game with an 0-8 Record against Dallas and his losing streak continued in this one with the Cowboys defeating the Packers 37-27. The downpoint of the game for Favre was in the second quarter when he was hit as he was throwing by Nathan Jones and was also intercepted on the play. That may not have been so bad but he was also hurt in the process and did not return.

Aaron Rodgers replaced Favre. He struggled a bit on the first drive but in the end he showed that he was worth being drafted in the first round. Rodgers played stellar, going 18-26 for 201 yards and a TD. He also rushed for a few key first downs.

Tony Romo and Terrell Owens had monster games though both coming up with big plays. Romo went 19-30 for 309 yards and 4 TD's while Owens had 7 catches for 156 yards and a touchdown. It would have been two touchdowns if it wasn't for one of the stranger plays I've seen. Tony Romo found Owens wide open in the end zone. Owens bobbled the pass and somehow gave it right to Al Harris. This one out.

That would've put them up by ten points with about 8 minutes to go and with the interception the Packers still had hope. However, Romo and the Cowboys weren't trying to hear it. They came up big on both ends of the ball in the fourth to take the game.

The game definitely lived up to the hype. Favre's status is day to day at this point but their next game is 10 days away so I expect Favre to be able to play.

Before the game there was a moment of silence in the arena for the Redskins Sean Taylor. Every player had a number 21 on their helmet which every player in the league will this year.

Packers, Cowboys Win to Improve to 10-1; Colts Beat Falcons

terrell_owens.jpgThe Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys won yesterday, setting up a meeting of 10-1 teams for the top spot in the National Football Conference. Brett Favre passed for 381 yards and three touchdowns as the Packers beat the Detroit Lions 37-26 for their sixth consecutive victory. Tony Romo threw two touchdown passes to help the Cowboys to a 34-3 win over the New York Jets, their fifth straight victory.

In the final game of the National Football League's Thanksgiving tripleheader yesterday, the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Atlanta Falcons 31-13 as Peyton Manning threw for three touchdowns.

Green Bay and Dallas will meet Nov. 29 in Irving, Texas. The winner will become the favorite to be the top seed in the NFC playoffs.

``It's going to be a great matchup,'' Dallas wide receiver Terrell Owens said in an interview with the NFL Network. ``We're looking forward to it and we'll be ready.''

Favre completed 31 of 41 passes at Ford Field in Detroit, including a team-record 20 straight at one point. It was his seventh 300-yard passing game of the season, tying a career high.

Greg Jennings caught two touchdown passes, Ruvell Martin had a scoring catch and Ryan Grant ran for a touchdown for Green Bay, which is 10-1 for the first time since 1962. Grant rushed for 101 yards and Donald Driver had 10 catches for 147 yards for the Packers.

``I'm very pleased,'' Favre told the NFL Network. ``We continue to put pressure on ourselves to play well and continue to win.''

Romo Ties Record

Jon Kitna passed for 224 yards with one touchdown and one interception as Detroit (6-5) lost its third straight game.

At Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas, Romo completed 21 of 28 passes for 195 yards with one interception in leading the Cowboys to the rout of the Jets (2-9). He now has 29 touchdown passes on the season, tying the Dallas team record held by Danny White.

Dallas's 10-1 start is the best in the franchise's 47-year history, bettering the 9-1 marks it posted in 1976 and 1983.

Marion Barber rushed for 103 yards with a touchdown for Dallas, which ran for 174 yards. Owens and Jason Witten each caught a scoring pass and Terence Newman returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown.

At the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, the Colts scored the final 24 points of the game after trailing 13-7 in the second quarter.

Manning completed 22 of 32 passes for 272 yards with one interception. Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark and Ben Utecht each caught a touchdown pass and Joseph Addai ran for a score.

Manning threw all of his scoring passes in the second quarter as the Colts (9-2) took a 21-13 halftime lead. Addai then scored on a 4-yard run in the third quarter and Adam Vinatieri added a 24-yard field goal.

Joey Harrington threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Roddy White for the Falcons (3-8).

NFL Week 10 Wrap

Manning's fourth quarter comeback came up a little short

Peyton Manning made a valiant effort. His team was down and he had to take his share of the blame. Coming off the emotional loss to the Patriots last week, the Colts lost 23-21 to the Chargers last night in San Diego. Manning threw 6 interceptions in the game. Thats his career high.

adamvin.jpgDespite Manning having one of his worse career games, the colts being riddled by injuries, and being down 23-0 at one point, the Colts still had a chance to take the game in the end. With 1:31 left in the fourth quarter the Colts had all but made an improbable comeback scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half.

The score was 23-21 with automatic Adam Vinatieri up to kick a 29 yard chip shot. Vinatieri has made 96% of field goals 30 yards and under in his career and he has been known as a clutch kick. However, the hostile crowd and the rainy conditions in last nights game must have gotten to him or something because he missed it and the Chargers escaped with the win. What a crazy ending.

Cowboys sweep the Giants

In the NFC game of the week, the Cowboys took it to the Giants yesterday beating them 31-20. The Cowboys came in being the most penalized team in the NFL and at some points it seemed like they were trying to beat each other by penalties.

The game was close at halftime. The Cowboys were up 17-14 and the Giants were content with going in the the locker rooms with that being the score. The Cowboys got a taunting penalty which allowed them another chance to get into field goal range which they capitalized on and went into halftime with the score tied up at 17.

The Cowboys have been known this year as a second half team though. Their superstars didn't disappoint either. Tony Romo hooked up with Terrell Owens for two second half TD's. One for 25 and one for 50.

Other Notable Games

  • Big Ben scampered for a 30 yard TD run in the Steelers 31-28 win over the Browns. The Browns had a shot in the end but their kicker Phil Dawson came up just short on a 52 yard field goal to tie it in the end.
  • Brett Favre's milestone season continued as he became only the second player to pass for over 60,000 yards in the Packers rout of the Vikings 34-0. Adrian Peterson left the game in the third quarter with a knee injury. He will get an MRI Monday.
  • These Rams looked like the Rams of old in their 37-29 win over the hot Saints. The Saints 4 game win streak was snapped in the loss as Marc Bulger went 27-33 for 302 yards and 2 td's
