The NHL is trying to be like the NBA with cool commercials promoting their product. It has worked for the NBA, they've had their highest ratings these playoffs than they have in years so why not.
The NHL did a pretty good job though, I like this commercial.
Red Wings 4 - Stars 1: The Red Wings came into game 6 on a mission. They looked like a determined team. They looked like a team that didn't want to let their recent slipups affect where they felt they belong, the Stanley Cup finals.
The Red Wings didn't want to leave anything to chance so they came out firing on all cylinders by getting 3 first period goals from Kris Draper, Pavel Datsyuk and Dallas Drake. That put them up early and for good as they won game 6 over the Stars 4-1 to eliminate them and clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Henrik Zetterberg added a short-handed goal early in the second period to all but clinch it.
Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood was pretty bored for most of the game. The Stars never really tested him until he got beat in the third by Stephane Robidas' goal during a power play. That was the only sign of life that the Stars showed in the game though.
Here is the closing seconds and some postgame footage.
Ok so a lot of people probably thought that this series was over when the Red Wings took a 3-0 lead (myself included) but the Stars are going out without a fight. Last night Marty Turco did all that he could do to make sure that the Stars wouldn't be going home early or at least not tonight.
Turco made 38 saves to help the Stars to the 2-1 victory in the all important game 5 last night. Throughout his career, Turco has never been effective at the Joe, going 0-9-2 in his career. Those odds didn't bode well for the visiting Stars who were already down 3-1 in the series going into last nights game.
The Stars pulled it together with goals from Trevor Daley and Joel Lundqvist to put them up.
The series is now a series again and game 6 will be Monday. The Red Wings are claiming that they aren't feeling any pressure but I bet you they are. Thats what the 2004 Yankees said and look at what happened. If the Red Wings don't win game 6, they aren't going to win the series.
Despite that fact that some fans can get vulgar and downright ignorant sometimes when they are cheering their team on at the games, it is ok for them to heckle opposing players and try to get in their head. As long as they limit the amount of beer they have.
After the Penguins game 3 win over the Flyers a few nights ago, they started taunting fans as they were leaving the game. Who does that? You already won the game, just go to the locker room.
Karma is serious and thats probably why they lost game 4. We will see how much more taunting they get to do.
It's not going to be as easy for the Penguins to make it to the Stanley Cup finals as they may have thought in the beginning. The Flyers didn't say die last night in their 4-2 victory over the Pens.
The Flyers came out very fast in the first period. They came out early and scored 3 goals in the first. Joffrey Lupul scored the first of his 2 goals in the first. When the Pens attempted to make a small comeback in the 3rd period with 2 goals by Jordan Staal, he also sealed the game with an empty netter in the final minute.
It doesn't look like the Stars, Mike Ribeiro really wants to win this series.
Moments after yesterdays loss to the Red Wings, Ribeiro let his emotions get the better of him. He slashed Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood across the chest from behind the net. This will almost definitely cause him to miss at least one game in the series due to suspension.
Now before you crucify Ribeiro, you have to know the Osgood did start it by using his stick to poke Ribeiro as he skated by but Ribeiro should've just let it go. Check out the video.
Ok so I know we all usually appreciate the whilin outfits that Craig Sager wears but he's got nothing on this cat from Canada, Don Cherry.
He made his debut on ESPN this week to do hockey commentary and he didn't say anything that anyone who has been following the playoffs doesn't already know BUT he did come on wearing this...
What was he thinking? I guess thats what they rock in Canada. I dunno.
He also found time to insult all hockey town fans by calling Detroit a "Redneck town." Now I've never been there but I imagine that they wouldn't like that too much.
When things are going right for your squad then you can make plays like this. Watch this crazy goal by Henrik Zetterberg, he shot it, fell down and as he was falling, still managed to shoot and score it top shelf... you can't fuck with this...
