This one should come as no surprise to anyone who casually follows boxing. Kelly Pavlik beat Jermaine Taylor in an unanimous decision last night. Fortunately for Taylor he wasn’t punished and embarrassed like he was in their last matchup five months ago.

The still undefeated Pavlik served Taylor with a steady dose of jabs and a tough right in the 11th that wobbled him. Taylor walked away from the fight looking demoralized and with a swollen right eyebrow.

This was a non-title rematch of their last bout where Pavlik beat Taylor down. Taylor was just fighting this fight for respect and to prove that he could beat Pavlik, neither happened. He probably should’ve skipped this one.

Kimbo Slice puts a beatdown on Tank Abbott

Last night well known streetfighter Kimbo Slice stepped into the ring with former UFC fighter Tank Abbott.  Not for long though.  This fight last about as a long as a Tyson fight in the 80s before Kimbo Slice straight dropped Tank. Check it out

Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch crash and fight at Bud Shootout practices

So Nascar is back… Not that anyone cares but it is anyway. Looks like Tony Stewart is back to his old bad boy ways as well. The sports most selfish, immature driver is also one of the best and is also a big reason why the sport is so popular.

During practice for the first race of the season, the Bud Shootout, Stewart hit Busch from behind, sending him into the wall. Busch came around the track and rammed the right side of Stewart’s car three times on pit road. Afterwards, it looked like Tony Stewart wanted to get out of the car and scrap but that didn’t happen.

All of that action took away from a thrilling win by Dale Earnhardt Jr. For once he earned something from skill rather than nepotism. It also may been the move over to Hendrick Motorsports. He needed to get out from under the racing womb.

Houston Dynamo win the 2007 MLS cup

Congratulations to the Houston Dynamo for winning the 2007 MLS cup.  They defeated the New England Revolution in the RFK stadium in Washington, DC.  The New England Revolution looked pretty good going into halftime up 1-0 after an early goal in the 20th minute by Taylor Twellman.

The second half though belonged to the Houston Dynamo though.  In the 61st minute Joseph Ngwenya scored and was assisted by Dwayne De Rosario.  Later Dwayne De Rosario scored his own goal on a header in the 74th minute.  It was assisted by Brad Davis and Craig Waibel.

This is the New England Revolutions third consecutive lose in the MLS cup and second loss to the Houston Dynamo in as many years.  Last year they lost to them in a shootout but that was not necessary this time around.

Sports Wrap for yesterday: Cotto beats Mosley, Ohio State loses, Celtics 5-0 after another win and more news…

cottomosley.jpgCotto Knocks off the Mosley

Last night in Madison Square Garden, Miguel Cotto faced off with Shane Mosley. Cotto usually wins fight with his passion and by overpowering opponents but last night was different. He faced off against Shane Mosley who was his best adversary to date. The fight went 12 rounds and was very hard fought but Miguel Cotto was able to pull off the well earned tactical victory.

There were no knockdowns and few big hits but the 27 year old Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs) was able to consistently land his jabs. Mosley couldn’t get anything effective going and could not stop the consistent Cotto attack.

Cotto’s right eye was cut in the final round after an accidental headbutt. Mosley tried to use his power to make a comeback in the final round but Cotto was able to avoid Mosley’s strengths as the blood dripped down his face. When the bell rung, Cotto knew that he had won.

Very good fight. Cotto looks foward to his potential next challege, “I’ll fight whoever the company tells me, Oscar (De La Hoya), (Floyd) Mayweather, all the big names,” Cotto said.

The Celtics win one for Doc

docrivers.jpgIt was a long day for Doc Rivers yesterday. In the beginning of the day he was in Illinois attending his father’s funeral. Only hours later he was in East Rutherford, NJ coaching his team to an impressive 112-101 victory over the Nets. Luckily for Doc though he doesn’t play for the Vikings.

The Celtics were able to effectively send a message to the Nets that they are in fact the team to beat in the East.

The Big three looked very good in this victory as usual. Paul Pierce, who was scoreless in the first quarter, went 13 of his 28 in the third when Boston turned a seven-point halftime lead into a 21-point margin. Allen added 27 points and Garnett had 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Vince Carter left the game in the third with a sprained right ankle after adding 17 points.

NBA News

  • Brandon Roy lead the way with 32 points for the Trail Blazers as the defeated the Mavs 91-82 last night. This ends a 13 game skid against the Mavs for the Blazers.
  • Leandro Barbosa had 39 points to lift the Suns past the Magic last night 106-96. Grant Hill was considered the bad guy for maybe the first time in his career last night having to deal with relentless booing. Despite that he still had 14 points and 8 rebounds

Martina Hingis accused testing positive for Cocaine at Wimbledon

Martina Hingis, the former winner of five grand slam titles, tested positive for Cocaine at Wimbledon this year. She denied using cocaine. She announced her retirement from tennis today in Zurich. She was formerly the number 1 ranked player in the world. She was currently ranked 19th.

This year at wimbledon she lost in the third round. I wonder if she snorted a couple of lines before the match. Oh well. Shes retiring.
